Sir Bobby Robson, 76, has passed away after a long battle with lung cancer.
He is widely regarded as the most successful England manager since 1966, leading the England
football team to the World Cup semi finals in 1990. Bobby also gained 20 caps for the England team
during his playing days.
Robsons playing career started in Fulham in 1950, eventually moving to West Bromwich Albion. Sir
Bobby also managed Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon, PSV Eindhoven, FC Porto and Newcastle United during
his coaching career, collecting the European Manager of the Year in 1997 with Barcelona, the UEFA
cup in 1981 and the FA Cup in 1978, as well as a number of domestic league trophies.
Sir Bobby has battled cancer 5 times since 1991. In 2007, it was diagnosed as terminal.
His final public appearance was in July 2009 at St James Park, at a charity match in his honour
between Robsons 1990 world cup squad and a Germany XI attended by 33,000 fans. One of the guests at
the match, Paul Gasgoigne, said:
"Sir Bobby is a legend over the world. He was the one who gave me my first run-out for the England
team.
When I saw him it was quite heartbreaking to see him that way but he is battling away and keeping on
top of it, which is great.
He’s battling cancer for the fifth time. It takes a man to beat it once but he’s doing it for a
fifth time."
He leaves behind Elsie, his wife of 59 years, and his 3 sons Andrew, Paul and Mark.

Rest In Peace
It was November 2003, the switching on of the Christmas Lights at Dalton Park Shopping Centre, Murton, Co. Durham, Sir Bobby Robson switching on the lights, normally anyone associated with Newcastle United would not really be too welcome in what is really the heart of Sunderland territory, but Sir Bobby Robson was different, he was a local County Durham lad who done good, a working class hero.
After you switched on the lights Bobby, you went to the management suite of the shopping centre, me and my friends hung about waiting for you, security and the police tried to move us on, but we had none of it and waited patiently for you, when you came out, we were told you only had 5 minutes before you had to leave, but you came over and talked to us for 5-10 minutes, taking the mickey out of a couple of my friends for supporting Sunderland, which we all had a good laugh about, but being who you are, we just ribbed you about managing Newcastle and having the balls to step into enemy territory.
Bobby, when you passed, I went upto St James', I was wearing a Sunderland shirt and thought I would get some grief for simply wearing the shirt, but my fears were put to one side when one fan came up to me and shook my hand, thanked me for coming, and we both agreed that there was only one man who could bring rivals together like that, that bitterness could be put to one side to commemorate one man, and that man was you Sir Bob.
God really pulled off one of the best transfer signings into heaven this July, he made one of the greatest acquisitions to his heavenly coaching team, with yourself, Sir Alf Ramsey, Brian Clough, Bob Stokoe, he has got one hell of a team at that football club in the sky
